Why Mitzvah Month
Lend a Hand, Touch a Heart: Community-wide Mitzvah Month 2009 is an opportunity for the entire Columbus Jewish community to come together and build community through voluntarism. The program will extend an opportunity for new and veteran community members to meet, interact and get to know each other while engaging in volunteerism. Projects are being drawn from among a wide array of Jewish and non-Jewish organization’s meeting specific and, by extension, communal needs.
The project’s menu will include many engagement opportunities that are appropriate to varied ages and physical capabilities. Additionally the initiative will raise the volunteerism ‘profile’ in the community. The wide-array of ‘mitzvah’ opportunities that community members are exposed to, feel good participating in and meeting like-minded individuals and families sharing these ideals will lead to ongoing volunteerism activities after the end of ‘Hand and Heart’ month. It is the intent and expectation that individuals will continue to volunteer beyond the end of the project.
